## What book distribution means

Distribution is how your book reaches retailers, libraries and streaming services. You can upload directly to each store, or use an aggregator that sends your book to many stores from one account. Direct uploads give you full control over pricing and promotions in that store. Aggregators save time and keep your catalogue in one place, usually in exchange for a share of each sale. Print books follow a different route: print on demand services connect your title to wholesalers, so bookstores and libraries can order it without you holding stock.

We choose the mix that fits your book, then keep the details consistent across every platform. Mismatched titles, descriptions or prices cause rejected files and confused readers.

## Wide distribution or Amazon exclusive?

Amazon is the starting point for most authors, but it is not the only place readers buy and borrow books. Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Google Play serve large audiences, and many readers borrow from libraries instead of buying. Staying exclusive to Amazon through KDP Select can suit some genres and launch plans, while going wide builds a presence in more places over time. We help you weigh it up and can set up either route. For the Amazon side, see our [Amazon book publishing services](https://theauthorpublishing.com/amazon-publishing/).

## Getting your book into bookstores and libraries

Bookstores and libraries rarely order directly from authors. They buy through wholesalers and library platforms such as OverDrive and Libby. To be available there, your book needs the right ISBN, wholesale discount and returns settings that stores will accept, and clean metadata. Distribution makes your book orderable. Whether a store stocks it is the store's decision, and we explain what to expect before you commit.

## What we set up for you

- Accounts opened in your name on every platform you choose
- ISBNs and book details prepared consistently across stores
- Files checked against each platform's requirements before upload
- Pricing set sensibly for each territory and currency
- A list of where your book is live, with the links

## Distribution is about being orderable, not just listed

A book can appear on a website and still be hard for a bookshop to order. Bookshops and libraries buy from wholesale catalogues, and a title only appears there if it has an ISBN, correct metadata and wholesale terms the shop can accept, including whether unsold copies can be returned. Online listing is useful, but ordering is what puts a book on a shelf or in a library collection. We set up distribution so your book is easy for trade buyers to find, price and order.

## Metadata is the quiet driver of discovery

Metadata is the information behind your book: title, series, description, subject codes, keywords and age range. Retailers and wholesalers use it to decide where your book appears. Subject codes called BISAC codes place the book on the right virtual shelf, and a wrong choice can send it to readers who are not looking for it. We write consistent metadata and use it across every store, so your book is described the same way everywhere.

## Choosing countries and currencies

Distribution is global, but your rights and your readers may not be. Decide which countries you will sell in, check that you hold the rights for each and set prices that make sense in local currencies. We review your rights, choose the territories with you and set prices that look fair to readers in each market.

## Questions about book distribution

### What is the difference between publishing and distribution?

Publishing is creating the finished book and making it available. Distribution is getting that book into the channels where readers buy or borrow it. Many authors publish on Amazon first and add other stores, libraries and formats afterwards.

### Do I keep my rights if I use a distributor?

Yes. Distributors and retailers receive permission to sell your book, not ownership of it. You can change platforms or withdraw the book, subject to each platform's terms.

### Does it cost money to distribute my book?

Many platforms are free to list on and take a share of each sale instead, while a few charge for optional services. Terms change, so we confirm the current ones for each platform before you commit.

### Can I distribute widely if my eBook is in KDP Select?

Not for the eBook during the enrolment period, because KDP Select requires exclusivity for the digital edition. Your print edition can still be sold elsewhere. We can plan the timing so you go wide when the enrolment ends.

### Will my book be in bookstores?

Distribution makes your book available to order through wholesalers, so bookstores and libraries can stock it if they choose to. Stores decide what goes on their shelves, so we never promise shelf placement.

### Do I need distribution to be in bookshops?

For most bookshops, yes. Shops order through wholesalers, so your book needs trade distribution and terms the shop can accept. See our page on [IngramSpark](https://theauthorpublishing.com/book-distribution/ingramspark/).

### Will bookshops stock my book automatically?

No. Distribution makes the book orderable. Getting it onto shelves usually takes outreach, local relationships and sales activity.

### Can I change my distribution later?

Yes. You can add stores or change terms, though some changes take time to reach every retailer.
