Hardcover and dust jacket design is the creation of the artwork that wraps a hardback book, including the front, spine and back, and for jacketed books, the flaps that fold inside. Our hardcover and dust jacket design services deliver print-ready files built to your printer’s template, so the cover looks right and the spine text sits where it should.

Hardcovers are premium products, and the cover is the first thing a reader handles. A misjudged spine width or a text line too close to the fold can make a handsome book look careless. This service is part of our book design services and builds on book cover design.

What our hardcover and jacket design service includes

Who this service is for

How this service works

  1. Choose the format. We discuss your printer, trim size, binding and whether you want a jacket.
  2. Brief and concept. We agree the design direction, using your existing paperback cover if you have one.
  3. Design and approve. We design the wrap, you review the proofs and we revise.
  4. Deliver files. We deliver print-ready files and check them against the printer’s template.

What is the difference between a case laminate and a dust jacket?

A case laminate hardcover has the artwork printed on a film laminated directly to the board, so the book is a single piece. A dust jacket is a separate printed paper cover that wraps a plain or cloth-covered case, with flaps that tuck inside. Case laminate suits print on demand and is usually cheaper. A jacket feels more traditional and gives you flap space for the blurb and the author bio. We explain the choices for your budget and printer.

Which printers and platforms offer hardcovers?

KDP offers hardcovers in a case laminate format in selected sizes, while IngramSpark offers a wider range of hardcover options, including jackets in some sizes. Lulu and other services have their own formats. Each has its own template, trim sizes, paper options and rules, and they change over time. We check the current specifications for your printer before we design. See our Amazon paperback and hardcover publishing and IngramSpark consultancy.

How is spine width calculated?

Spine width depends on page count, paper type and the printer’s thickness for that paper. Printers publish formulas or calculators, and the number changes when you add or remove pages. We calculate the spine after your interior is final, because a late page change needs a new cover. We also allow for the hinge area on a hardcover, where text must be kept clear of the fold.

What goes on the flaps and the back?

The back cover usually carries the blurb, review quotes, a short author line and the barcode. Jacket flaps carry the longer description on the front flap and the author bio and photo on the back flap. We design the text blocks to fit, with comfortable margins and a consistent hierarchy. You approve the copy, or our writers can draft it. We use genuine quotes only, and we never invent reviews or awards.

How long does design take and what does it cost?

A hardcover wrap usually takes two to three weeks from brief to final files, depending on revisions. We do not publish a price list. Every project receives a free quote with a fixed price in writing before work starts, and printing costs are separate. If you already have a paperback cover, a matching hardcover can take less time.

What should I check on a hardcover proof?

Order a printed proof before you approve a run. Check that the spine text is centred and reads in the right direction, that nothing sits too close to the hinge or the edges, that colours match your screen reasonably well and that the barcode is clean. Hold the book and open it, because a cover can look fine flat and cramped in the hand. Our designers review the proof with you and adjust the file if anything needs shifting.

Questions about hardcover & dust jacket design

Can I turn my paperback cover into a hardcover cover?

Yes. We adapt the artwork, resize it for the new trim and rebuild the spine and flaps.

Does KDP offer dust jackets?

KDP’s hardcover is case laminate. For dust jackets, other printers such as IngramSpark offer options in some sizes.

Can I add foil or embossing?

Special finishes are mainly available on offset print runs. We advise on what is possible for your route.

Do I need a barcode on the back?

Yes, for retail. We place the ISBN barcode in a safe area or use the one the printer generates.

Will the cover match my paperback and eBook?

Yes. We keep the design consistent across all formats and adapt it for each shape.

Can you design just the jacket?

Yes. We design the jacket on its own, or as part of a full cover package.

Do I keep the files?

Yes. Your agreement states which source files you receive, and print-ready files are yours.

Can you work from my existing artwork?

Yes, if you have the rights to it. We check image quality and licences first.
