Photo and coffee table book publishing is the production of image-led books, such as photography collections, travel books, art catalogues and family heritage albums, printed in colour on quality paper. Our photo and coffee table book publishing services plan the sequence, design the spreads, manage colour and arrange printing and distribution.
A photo book lives or dies by its images, and a poor workflow wastes them. Wrong colour settings, low-resolution files or cramped layouts can dull great photographs. This service is part of our book publishing services and works with book formatting and typesetting and book printing.
What our photo book service includes
- Image selection and sequence. Help choosing and ordering images so the book flows, with pacing, pairings and quiet pages in the right places.
- Layout design. Full-bleed, grid and mixed spreads designed for the images, with captions, essays and credits set cleanly.
- Colour management. Colour-corrected files and the right colour profiles for the printer, plus a printed proof to check results.
- Cover and binding. A hardcover or premium paperback design, with advice on finishes, jackets and paper.
- Printing and distribution. Print-on-demand or short-run printing, ISBNs and retailer setup, with your accounts kept in your name.
Who this service is for
- Photographers and artists publishing a portfolio or exhibition book
- Travel writers and local historians with strong pictures
- Families and organisations producing heritage and anniversary books
- Authors creating a gift or coffee table edition of a story
How this service works
- Collect your images. You send your best images in the highest resolution you have, with any captions and text.
- Plan the book. We agree the size, the page count, the sequence and the binding.
- Design and proof. We design the spreads, you review them and we order a printed proof.
- Print and publish. We finalise files, set up printing and distribution and check the finished copies.
What image quality does a photo book need?
Print needs more detail than a screen. As a general rule, images should be about 300 pixels per inch at the size they appear, so a full-page image needs a large original file. Low-resolution images look soft or blocky in print. We review every image early and tell you which ones are too small, so you can find better originals before design begins.
How does colour management work?
Screens and printers show colour differently, so a photo can look different on paper from how it looked on a monitor. We convert images to the profile the printer needs and check the result on a proof. Printing colour is expensive, so we recommend ordering a proof before you commit to a run. A small adjustment to a profile can protect the whole print.
Which size, paper and binding suit a coffee table book?
Larger trims, such as 10 x 8 inches or bigger, show images well, but they cost more to print and post. Heavier, coated paper gives rich colour, while uncoated paper feels softer and suits some styles. Hardcover binding suits a gift book, and some printers offer lay-flat bindings for spreads. We show two or three options with costs, so you can balance quality and price.
Why are photo books expensive to print, and how do I price one?
Colour pages, large trims and heavy paper raise the cost of each copy, so print-on-demand photo books often need a high list price to leave a royalty. Short-run offset printing can cut the unit cost if you can sell several hundred copies, but it needs money up front. We compare the routes, calculate your break-even and help you choose between print on demand and a small run.
What about rights, releases and credits?
You need the right to use every image. That means your own photographs, or permission from the photographer, and releases from identifiable people where your use requires them. Captions and credits should be accurate. We keep a simple log and build the credits page from it. We cannot give legal advice, but we point out the questions to settle before printing.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Most photo books take four to ten weeks, depending on page count, the number of images and proof rounds. We do not publish a price list, because cost depends on size, pages and printing method. Every project receives a free quote with a fixed price in writing before work starts, and printing costs are shown separately.
How do I promote a photo or coffee table book?
Visual books sell through sight, so show the book. Share a few spreads on your website and social channels, record a short flip-through video and offer signed copies. Approach galleries, local shops and the organisations connected to your subject, since they often stock gift books. Exhibitions and talks are natural launch moments. We prepare cover images and spread previews for you, and we can plan the launch with our book launch strategy service.
Questions about photo & coffee table book publishing
Can I use my phone photos?
Modern phone photos can work at smaller sizes. We check each image and tell you which can run at full size.
Do I need a proof copy?
We strongly recommend one. Colour and paper behave differently from a screen, and a proof prevents costly mistakes.
Can I include text and captions?
Yes. We design captions, essays and credits so they support the images and do not compete with them.
Can you make a book for a family history?
Yes. We scan or restore photographs if needed, and arrange them with captions and stories.
Should I choose print on demand or a short run?
It depends on volume and budget. We calculate both and recommend the better fit.
Can the book be sold on Amazon?
Yes. Print-on-demand and wholesale routes are available, and we explain what each can print.
Do I keep my rights?
Yes. You keep your copyright and your royalties, and we agree the use of images in writing.
Can you create an eBook version?
Yes, but image-heavy books need a fixed layout or a PDF. We advise on what readers will see.
